'A Hard-Fought Honor' Giclee Print
This image depicts a hypothetical manhunt in 1500s Sengoku Era Japan. The war-hardened samurai proved to be a worthy foe, and is being rewarded with a prized trophy for his valor.
I normally try to adapt every element to match an 1800s Ukiyo-e aesthetic. In this case, however, I decided not to change the off-world hunters' design. I think keeping them this way better supports the narrative that they are strange, alien visitors who don't belong in our world.
Japan has a rich history of depicting the horrific and the macabre. Some of my favorite pre-modern gothic artists include Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi and Kyosai. Because this tradition of frightening imagery already exists in abundance, it was very easy for me to adapt modern sci-fi horror into the Ukiyo-e style. I just had to follow in the footsteps of my art heroes!
